Lifestyle Modifications for Patients with GERD/REFLUX

  1. Eat in a relaxed stetting
  2. Eat several small meals throughout the day instead of 3 large meals
  3. Try alternating solids and liquids
  4. When taking medications or supplements, take one at a time
  5. Always include lean meats, and low-fat items in your diet
  6. Avoid:
    • Caffeine
    • Mints
    • Alcohol
    • Chocolate or cocoa
    • Chili powder and other spices
    • Cured and spiced meats like sausage and hot dogs
    • Pepper
    • Citrus juice (orange, lemon, and tomatoes)
    • Pickled items
  7. Do not eat right before you lay down to rest, go to sleep or recline in a chair. Allow 30 to 45 minutes to pass in an upright position before laying down or reclining.
  8. Elevate the head of the bed 6 inches. This is best done with blocks under the legs of the bed, as it is not as effective to add extra pillows at the neck.
  9. Avoid laying on the right side.
